For the last couple of years, I’ve taken several courses as both a refresher and booster in preparation for more potential graduate school. Going back to school as a senior nurse (nope, I’m not in my 20s anymore!) isn’t just about career advancement—it’s about evolving, leading, and redefining what’s possible in healthcare. So many changes – good and bad – are happening around us, and I want to bring a bigger impact to the profession.

Whether pursuing an advanced degree, specialty certification, or a complete career shift, everyone should know that seasoned nurses bring unmatched experience, resilience, and insight to the classroom and beyond. As I navigate a shift, I continue to see that many nurses hesitate, likely wondering:

💡 Am I too late to start over?
💡 Can I balance school with work and family?
💡 Will this truly benefit my career?

The answer? Absolutely. I am, and so can you! The skills and wisdom gained from years of bedside experience make senior nurses uniquely positioned to excel in leadership, education, research, or advanced practice roles like NP, CRNA, or some other specialization.

If you’re a nurse contemplating this leap, know that growth has no expiration date. I received my FNP from The George Washington University over a decade ago, and I’m going back to school. Your experience and ability to soak up new information and apply it is your superpower—use it to shape the future of healthcare.

And, yep, that’s my pug in the photo being a distraction. 😄

🔹 Are you a nurse who returned to school later in your career? Share your journey!

My mission, if I so choose to take: Submit an abstract. DONE.

If chosen, here’s my topic area:

Healthcare professionals often navigate overwhelming workloads and demanding environments without a clear sense of where they truly want to be, often leading to burnout and an imbalanced life. This presentation explores the journey of a nurse practitioner who, despite a passion for patient care, found primary care misaligned with her long-term goals. Through transitions in cardiothoracic units, urgent care, holistic primary care, and ultimately the ICU, she gained valuable insights but at the cost of physical and mental exhaustion. Recognizing the need for change, she returned to bedside ICU nursing to regain balance while preparing for her long-held aspiration—becoming a Nurse Anesthetist. This session will discuss recognizing when career shifts are necessary, overcoming obstacles, and strategically planning for long-term fulfillment. Whether considering a transition or seeking sustainable success in healthcare, attendees will gain practical guidance on making intentional career changes to achieve a healthier, more rewarding future.

Every shift at the hospital, every visit to the pediatrician with my child, or every visit to a clinic for the crud is a reminder of the amazing people I work with, so to that………to all nursing professionals, your dedication, compassion, and smile light the way for so many, including myself. Not only are you a comfort to work with, but you transform care into that same comfort and challenges into triumphs every single day. Never underestimate the power of your impact.

As Florence Nightingale once said:
‘I attribute my success to this: I never gave or took any excuse.’

Keep pushing forward, knowing that your work shapes lives, inspires hope, and creates a better world. You are truly the heartbeat of healthcare!”
